This was written for the dVerse poetics challenge this weekend…brilliant visual prompts and a timely reminder that we don’t just see or hear but also sense in so many ways our relationship with the world…thank you Kelvin.

This is ‘quick and dirty’ for now but I think may be worth working on in the future:
3 Amphora c BC100
Dug from earthy keeping
numbered, tagged re-hid,
guarding simple secrets.
Sandy hued plainness
unadorned and bare,
guarding spare truths.
Scratchy and uneven,
pitted, pocked, oddly warm,
guarding poor man’s wealth.
Hollow, mellow echo
sounds absorbed, not lost,
guarding empty spaces.
Scents alive in echoes,
smelled with mouth, throat, nose,
caustic, fruited, slick,
revealing far-off lifestyle.
Love the repetition of ‘guarding’ and esp like: ‘alive in echoes / smelled with mouth, throat, nose / caustic, fruited, slick …’
interesting…i like the thought of it being a archeological piece…the absorbtion of the sound but not lost….it being a guardian as well…like the touch on smell as well…..
ah you captured the mystery well…was wondering about their story, what they contained, which arms carried them… very interesting take on this sally
…wonderful Sally… revealing far-off lifestyle — now that clearly demostrate the entire scene you created… i really like ancient items for it allows me to have this feel of seeing face to face the men of old times… that three Urns was too special to me… those were some from my mum’s collections & was actually displayed in our living room… it pleases me everytime i look at it ’til one day i decided to draw it… glad you picked this art… smiles…
thank you all – Kelvin, your image was so evocative of time and place as well as the objects themselves..great prompt
Yes, please revisit this poem, as it has me very intrigued… love the evocation of lives not so dissimilar to our own but so remote…
I love the image of containers guarding empty spaces.
Thank you for commenting Tony and Marina – it was a simple poem for an evocative image
